Our Story

Cyndi Turner, LCSW, LSATP, MAC and Craig James, LCSW, LSATP, MAC began working together in 2001 and things just clicked. They were quickly seen as the “rogue therapists” who did things differently, but somehow their clients got better. They were practicing Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction even before it was widely accepted in the treatment field.

In 2006 they developed the Dual Diagnosis Recovery Program© for people struggling with both substance use disorders and mental health issues. But they were functioning in a broken system. They wanted to correct the problems that Northern Virginians were facing with fragmented behavioral health. Their own neighbors faced waitlists, well-meaning but untrained providers for addiction treatment, and driving to multiple offices for services where the clinicians rarely communicated with one another.

They envisioned experts who responded quickly and compassionately in one location. They put their Leesburg homes up as collateral and gathered a team of six therapists with over a hundred years’ experience between them. Insight Into Action Therapy opened its door to clients on July 13, 2015 with the mission of setting the standard to which other practices would be compared.

In the years following, they brought on additional therapists and a psychologist, psychiatrist, and nurse practitioner. This allowed them to provide psychological testing, medication management, and Medication-Assisted Treatment in addition to individual family, couples, and group therapy all in one location, with all providers actively collaborating.

Craig and Cyndi recognized that there were limited resources for their clients who were dealing with a moderate to a severe substance use disorder. They saw facilities make promises to families based on profit, not in the best interest of the person. Some programs made recommendations that maximized reimbursement from insurance companies, rather than what was clinically appropriate.

In 2018, they founded Insight Recovery Centers with the goal of personalizing treatment for the Spectrum of Substance Use. Insight is able to provide a continuum of care for individuals and their families struggling with alcohol, drugs, and mental health issues. Over twenty years, Cyndi and Craig’s compassionate experts have helped thousands of families restore balance in their lives based on their individualized definition of recovery. Insight Recovery Centers prides itself on being an LGBTQ+ friendly treatment center and welcoming of all individuals in need of their services.

“Once alcohol or substance abuse has a grip on your life, then achieving sobriety and abstinence becomes a daily struggle. That struggle has been made easier for me by the team at Insight into Action. A year ago, I was hopelessly addicted to alcohol; drinking near constantly, isolating, and essentially becoming non-functional. I couldn’t see a pathway to sobriety again. I found my way to a rehab/detox center and was successful in becoming sober again. Upon returning home, I entered the Intensive Outpatient Program at Insight Recovery Centers. Through a combination of group and individual therapy, continuing education, and many other methods, I learned to replace my flawed coping mechanisms with a new set of skills to combat my addiction and its underlying causes. After successfully completing IOP, I transitioned to twice-weekly individual sessions with my therapist as I continued my journey back to sanity. Today, 10 months later, I am happy again; well-adjusted, high-functioning, and gratefully sober.”
